STUDENT MEDICAL INTERN LEARNING EXPERIENCE

The SMILE program was created at Dr. Leisure Yu's Clinic to allow students interested in the health care profession an opportunity to view different occupations available in medicine.

SMILE.....

• Allows students the opportunity to gain experience working with doctors and other health care professionals.
• Presents students with the opportunity to gain first hand knowledge of the multi-faceted areas of health care.
• Is open to high school and college students that are seeking to broaden their horizon and are interested in the medical field.

Interns at Dr. Yu's clinic are presented with a wide variety of responsibility and are given opportunities to work in areas of patient care, research, and marketing. SMILE interns had the opportunity in 2008 to work abroad in China, supplying medical and educational support with AIDS victims within rural areas of China.

INTERNS.....

• Help create, produce, and package marketing guides
• Research different treatments and methods used at Dr. Yu's clinic.
• Compile this research into a quarterly newsletter publication
• Deliver balloon bouquets to post surgical patients
• Run a hospitality table for patients
• Work with the media to promote Dr. Yu's clinic.
• Help design and update the SMILE website
• Allows students to work with doctors and experience different aspects of medicine

Leisure Yu MD, INC, is also in the process of creating a business internship in coordination with the University of Redlands Business Department. This will allow students to explore the business aspect of medicine.
